Ocean Port streak ends against Shaheen

It was a fantastic run, but Squamish’s Ocean Port FC finally succumbed to its second loss of the season on Sunday (Nov. 29) after winning nine straight Vancouver Metro Soccer League games.

Division 2A rival Shaheen FC pounced on Ocean Port early, scoring quickly and shutting down its offence for a 3-0 victory in North Vancouver. It was the first game all season Ocean Port failed to tally a goal.

Shaheen potted two goals in the first 15 minutes and added a clincher in the second half.

“As soon as we got the ball they were on us,” said Ocean Port manager Dave Harrison.

“The players did not play as a team like they normally do and I think we only had two shots in the first half. We just weren’t moving the ball and creating opportunities.”

Shaheen’s first goal developed off a corner kick and a clean header. The team quickly scored another goal off a free kick.

After the pair of goals, Ocean Port keeper Jeremy Galley sustained a knee injury and had to leave the game. Rod Wilson took over for the rest of the game. The seriousness of Galley’s injury is unclear.

Shaheen has been chasing Ocean Port down ever since losing the first meeting 3-1 in late September. The win ousts Squamish from second to third place determined by goals for and against, as both teams have nine wins and two losses.

“That was their chance to move up and they took it well,” said Harrison. “We had a couple little spells where we had some chances but all in all we were just outplayed.”

Ocean Port has a chance to reclaim top spot when it hosts UBC Metropolitan at Quest University’s turf field tomorrow (Dec. 5). Squamish handed UBC its only loss with a 2-0 road win in October.

UBC is a fast, young team that thrives on turf fields, but the Brennan Park fields remain closed due to weather conditions. The league leaders have scored 43 goals while only conceding eight goals in 11 games.

Harrison is confident his team will bounce back despite being the underdogs.

“We’ve beat them on turf before.”

The game starts at 2 p.m.
